Assessment of nutritional status in hospitalized children

Introduction: Undernutrition in hospitalized children is a widespread problem but remains under diagnosed. Aims: To assess the nutritional status of hospitalized children at Tunis Children's Hospital and determine the associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted three times, including children aged 3 months to 14 years hospitalized for more than 48 hours. Results: 87 patients included. Prevalence of undernutrition on admission was 21%. Chronic undernutrition in 8 patients (9%). More common in rural children and poor socioeconomic classes. Underlying chronic disease, the nutritional risk score and Waterlow index were significantly correlated with undernutrition. Conclusion: Undernutrition in hospitalized children is common in Tunisia but remains under diagnosed and insufficiently supported.Downloads
