Abstract

Seizures are a common cause of hospitalization. The first step of the diagnostic approach is to affirm the epileptic nature of a paroxysmal episode, secondly search an occasional cause that may require an urgent treatment. If the diagnosis of epilepsy is established, it is necessary to specify its type and etiology. The history of the patient, the clinical examination, with a few simple exams, are usually sufficient to recognize the cause of the seizure and allow urgent treatment before further exploration.
