Abstract

Background: Childhood asthma is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disorder. It has been described that vitamin D could improve the control of this disorder. The aim of our study was to determine the level of vitamin D status in children with asthma and to analyze the relationship between vitamin D levels and asthma control. Methods: We conduct a descriptive and analytic study in the infantile Medicine B Department of the Children's Hospital of Tunis from March 2019 to July 2019. Results: We collected 49 patients with an average age of 7.6 ± 1.5 years. The mean serum 25(OH)D level was 17.5 ng/ml. Thirty-three children were deficient in vitamin D. A statistically significant relationship (p=0.04) was found between vitamin D levels in subjects not exposed to tobacco compared to those exposed. We did not find a correlation between hypovitaminosis D and severe asthma or poor control. Conclusions: Paradoxically, hypovitaminosis D is common in our children with asthma. A large study is recommended to achieve the role of vitamin D in improving the outcome of this disease.
