Nephrotic syndrom in children : Are there risk factors for steroid dependence?
Keywords:

Backround : Most patients with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome are steroid-responsive, about 50% relapse and often become steroid-dependent and exposed to long-term steroid complications. Aim : To determine predictive risk factors for steroid dependence. Methods: review of literature. Results: Early age of onset of the disease less than 4 years, male gender, personal or family history of atopy, hypercholesterolemia, prolonged course of prednisone therapy, initial remission time ≥ 7 days and first relapse within 6 months were significant risks for the development of steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome. Conclusion: By identifying these children, we could use adequate immunosuppressive drugs earlier and reduce morbidity related to steroids and multiple relapses.Downloads
