Seizures with fever in the pediatric emergency ward of Parakou Teaching Hospital in 2013: Epidemiological, clinical, etiological and evolving aspects

Abstract

Background: Seizures with fever in children are frequent and are the result of fever induced cerebral hyperexcitability. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, etiological and evolving aspects of seizures with fever in children admitted in a pediatric emergency ward in Northern-Benin. Findings: 237 children have been registered over 1581 children hospitalized during the period of study (15%). The most frequent etiologies were severe malaria (76.37%) and bacterial meningitis (16.03%). Among these children, 73.8% got healed, 11.4% have deceased. Conclusion: Seizures with fever are frequent in the tropical pediatric practice. Severe malaria and bacterial meningitis were the most seen etiologies.
